Secondary Culture Knowledge
In addition to the Spanish language and Hispanic cultures, the student demonstrates a general knowledge of a socio-cultural group other than a Hispanic one or mainstream American culture. The student develops a basic understanding of the ways of thinking (ideas, beliefs, attitudes, values, philosophies), the behavioral practices (patterns of social interactions) and the cultural products – both tangible and intangible (for example, art, history, literature, music) – of the second culture.
MLO Narrative
Embracing and understanding other cultures than your own is exceedingly important because it allows individuals to be more open minded and willing to learn new ways of living. The culture that I studied outside of my principal studies was the Japanese culture which is not really connected with Hispanic culture so learning about new cultures was rewarding. I developed a better understanding of various cultures from the courses I took and the interests I have so I have conducted my own personal studies as well. The course JAPN 309: Japanese Literature in Translation and GS 362: Global Literature's were classes heavily involved with other cultures and I will continue to expand my knowledge on global cultures.
