SPAN 313 Intro to Spanish Linguistics B
LING 392 Nature of Language/Acquisition In progress
SPAN 308 History/Culture of Aztlan: SW USA A
WLC 400 Senior Capstone In progress
GS 362 Global Literature's A
SPAN 313: My final course with professor Arrizabalaga, whom was essentially my Spanish mentor in college because I had taken now four courses with him. I had hoped this course would go in a similar direction as LING 392, but they ended up being completely different courses. This course went into a lot of detail on dialects of Spain, the country he was from. It would have been useful if we focused more on all Spanish dialects but it was condensed information. Overall still an interesting course. The course fulfilled MLO 2: Language and Linguistic Knowledge.
LING 392: This was a course conducted in English but the information I was taught was exceedingly helpful into my acquisition and understanding of the Spanish language. It was incredibly helpful to take this course concurrently with SPAN 313 because there was similar information but this course went way more in depth. It enabled me to understand linguistics as a study more, therefore aiding me in Spanish linguistics. This course fulfilled MLO 2: Language and Linguistic Knowledge.
SPAN 308: Another one of my favorite courses in my academic career and strangely enough this was a course conducted online. I usually have not had the best experience with online courses and I did not believe I would learn much from this course because I am already highly knowledgeble about Mexican history and culture but alas, I learned more than I thought possible. This course revolved around culture but I needed another course to fulfill my linguistic knowledge so I made previous arrangements with the professor and was able to submit my assignments in Spanish and English, therefore giving me good practice into translation. Thus this course fulfilled MLO 2: Language and Linguistic Knowledge.
WLC 400: This course was my most frustrating upper division course for my major. I believe that too much time was spent on nothing but meaningless lectures and we hardly got time in class to work on our Capstone project and received little feedback. Also these e-portfolios may be useful but it was a lot of extra work for the seniors who already had a lot on their plate. This course should have solely focused on Capstone and it should have been a progression where we would be able to receive feedback throughout the course of the months. I also understand that there are less WLC students at CSUMB than other majors but combining Japanese and Spanish students is ineffective because the course is almost solely conducted in English then. The only times Spanish was really utilized was towards the end of the semester for our paper and presentation. Overall a disappointing course although it fulfills MLO 1: Language Proficiency and MLO 6: Information Technology Literacy.
GS 362: Initially this course was meant to fulfill my GWAR requirement but I was told I was one course short from graduating and was able to have this course fulfill MLO 3: Literacy and Cultural Knowledge. Throughout the semester we read several books on various cultures but focused a lot on the Caribbean and the New World. We read Bartolome De Las Casa's, A Short Account of the Destruction of the Indies, which focused on the Spanish conquest of the America's from the eyes of a Spaniard who was participating in the atrocious acts against the native people. Overall, was one of my favorite courses in my academic career.
